  1. This is my wife every afternoon but with a 4 and 2 year old and an umbrela stroller on the floor.

Great shot Travis...it really captures what it is like to commute with kids in the system. The tough part is waking up the sleeping child before your stop passes by.

  2. Wow. Great shot. It kind of makes our city look depressing.

  3. Phil, I'm not in your city, but this doesn't depress me. I see a trusting child, an eager reader, a caring , courageous mom and Travis with the heart (not to mention the skill) to share it with us. I think it makes your city look human and rich with the truest wealth. Okay, enough sappy comment!

    Thanks Travis!

  4. M Dohoney-

You should try living here. Phil's right. And what's courageous about this woman? If she's courageous for riding the subway with her kids, that's kind of depressing, too.

    But great work again, Travis!

  5. I don´t see it. What could be depressing? It´s very, very early in the morning. The City is just blinking with one eye. The other one is still asleep. Kind of human.

  6. uups, sorry, see it´s 6:15 pm!! well than it is kind of depressing.
    Sorry.

  7. I don't see how this is depressing. For many of us here in NYC this is just our life. The mom appears to be coming home from work and picked up her kids from perhaps an afterscchool program or whatever and that is just what it is. The use of the word depressing attaches a negative connotation to this picture when it shows a mom that appears to care and is doing her best.

I apologize for this response but my responses are usually about what is pictured and not the artistry of the shots as the subways are as much a part of my life as breathing. - Eric

  8. What a great photo. Family time together on the commute home (right next to the couple having their own private discussion). I am a school librarian and a mother; this is one of my favorite shots on your blog. Thank you!

  9. Eric- Here's what is depressing about the photo. The fact that for many in NYC, that is just your life. Children passing out exhausted on a dirty, noisy subway car, with graffiti acid-sketched into the windows by miscreants. Sitting next to other people passed out in their winter clothes. Doing your afterchool work in this environment, picking up your kids after work and at 6:15 pm still not being home. Yes, Eric, the use of the word depressing attaches a negative connotation. Many people find the above set of facts as far from the ideal, and a bit of a downer. You may not find it depressing, or you may not WANT to find it depressing, and you may think this is a little slice of heaven. But in no way can you possibly, honestly say you don't see HOW this is depressing to other people. What I think you mean to say is, "hey, this is my life, how dare you find it depressing." We dare.

  10. What's so funny to me is that I saw something completely different in this picture than any of the comments. My focus was on the woman on the left with the met life poster behind her. It looks to me like the "if if if" is rising from her like those cartoon thought balloons and she's fantasizing "What if" because she's alone--while everyone else in the picture is with someone. A family--a couple. I thought it just seemed kind of sad because she looked lonely--not because the kids are doing homework on the train! Great pic, Travis. It obviously gets the mind churning.
