Q Train ~ Manhattan Bridge ~ 6:36pm

The New Yorker magazine has a great cartoon caption contest at the end of each issue. The winners are always so simple you feel stupid you didn't think of it. When I was processing this image I could come up with a dozen funny lines to caption this photo. Can you?

  1. Well, I don't have a caption but I do love this image. The juxtaposition is just great. No one dares look to the contagious smile. Nice capture.

  2. I thought the image was very Orwellian: a leering, disembodied head dominating the crowd. And the narrowness of the image increases the sense of confinement. Not funny at all. Much more Big Brother Is Watching You.

  3. Can't be creative before I have my coffee, but I did notice a couple of things. The first thing that popped into my head was exactly the word that Gabriel used - juxtaposition. Lots of weary, resigned commuters with the strange juxtaposition of that smiling face. Then notice the hand on the bar appears to be clenched into a fist about to smack her in the jaw - - wipe that smile off your face. But personally being a "wide open spaces" kinda gal, this gives me claustrophobia.

  5. I have never been on the NY subway, but your photos make me feel as if I have. You capture the best thought provoking photos & I start my day by checking your site before I even have my coffee.

We are going to NY this Sat. to see our granddaughter and will take subway from Herald Sq. to Brooklyn (7th Ave. & 9th St.) then walking to 5th St. around noon. Is the train always this packed? Any hints for Grandma & Grandpa??

Enjoy your photos and please keep it going.

    Enjoy your day!!

  6. "Oops. (heh-heh) My bad."

To Grandma & Grandpa: the train is usually very crowded only at rush hours, 7-9-ish a.m. and 4-6-ish p.m. In between those hour it's usually less crowded, which can often mean you should be a bit more, not less, vigilant. Enjoy your visit with your granddaughter, and I hope you love New York. We're really just a bunch of teddy bears!

  7. Travis - I think the lad y in the poster is smiling at you and saying thanks for all the pics!

  8. Grandma & Grandpa, If the weather is nice you should get off the train at Smith and 9th st (that's two stops before your stop at 7ave and 9th st.) walk to both ends of the platform to enjoy the view. Smith and 9th is the highest point on the NYC subway system (88ft?). You can see the Statue of Liberty when you look west and a great view of the city when you look back North. And the view out of over South Brooklyn is wonderful. Some days (like Friday) I get off the train on the way to work just to hang out there and enjoy the air and view. On the way out of the city the train goes above ground just after Carroll Street. If you don't want to get off the train then make sure you're on the right side of the train, get a window seat and you can see the statue of Liberty betwen the buildings as you come into Smith and 9th. Oh yeah, if you need help on the subway don't hesitate to ask a fellow passenger, we love to show our expertise. Have fun and enjoy the Big Apple, it's a great time of the year to be here! Travis

  10. Ce n'est pas un sourire.

  11. to me it says: we´re all smiling.... you just can`t see. Have you ever took the chance to offer this crowd your best smile you can bring and look them straight in the eyes? It´s like a little wonder how everybody gets friendly and starts smiling back...o.k. not all. Sure.
But it works. I bet you in New York for sure. Sometimes I get along with a smile when I just took a very close foto of somebody. Never been to New York. It´s so far and then so close with these pictures.

  12. Nice capture. Funny effect.

  13. Very interesting. The photo at the top adds a lot!
