Man did the fog roll in today. It was crazy! It seemed like we were riding through the clouds. Here at Smith and 9th, the highest point in the subway system, you couldn't see the ground.
Here is a dumb challenge. What is wrong with this situation? A hint, probably only people that commute from Brooklyn will know.
I've been pretty silent lately with writing because I've been feverishly working on finishing prints of this work for an exhibition in Abilene, Texas. I'm happy to say I can see the end in sight. The show is going to be 33 prints. The exhibition title is "Brooklyn to Grand Central: A Commuter's Journal" and will be hanging from Feb 3 until March 30th. I'll be in town for the opening reception on Feb 10th. Come on by. More info as it gets a little closer. Oh I guess it is pretty close.
There have been all sorts of interesting projects thrown on the table lately in regards to my subway work. I think a lot of it has to do with the Times article. It's funny but this is probably the point where the photographer could spend so much time with other aspects of a project that they would get tired of the work and run out of time to go out and shoot more. I guess I'm pretty well insulated against that. No matter what happens I still have to get on that train. And so the images keep piling up.
I've not been able to respond to many emails lately so I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone for taking the time to comment on the images! You'd never believe how many times I hear your comments rattling around my head when I'm riding the train.
Amazing, Travis. The train to nowhere. On friday the 13th no less.
of all your images i think i like this one the best, probably because its so different. i had to check i was looking at the right site! very mysterious.
Were you standing on the tracks? I'm a Londoner so I don't know what might be wrong unless you were either in the cab of the train or on trackside.
Whatever the 'deliberate mistake' is, this image rocks. Good one.
i'm trying to answer the challenge, and i rode the f-train from 7th ave to 34th street commuting for years (now i take the r to the d), but i can't tell what it is for sure. but it looks like you're looking out the front he the f-train, and i thought that you usually can't do that on an f-train, but then i think maybe you can in those older trains that look more like the a-train cars. ?? but do post the answer some time ok?
hhmmm, i'm looking at your photo and i realize that you aren't at smith-9th street station yet. you appear to be waiting to enter and i think that i see a red signal in front of you. i always hate being delayed between these two station (4th ave and smith-9th) because it usually means a signal problem :)
Wow. An absolutely amazing picture. Too bad the show is in Texas and not Brooklyn. I would have loved to check it out.
Brrrrr. And something about the odd composition here, the way the smooth curve slings the weight of the picture around, gives it quite an unnerving edge. It emphasizes the dangerous void on the right. I reckon this is a pretty strong image.
I love when you emerge above ground every once in a while...
Fantastic shot. Don't ride your line very often but I do get to ride above ground to my stop on the 1 - I'm at 125th.
Wow! I'm in HEAVEN!! (If only it was a train ride away) I dont think I'll be coming down. :-) Nice image, Travis. I love it.
Fabulous shot. One of your best. I have no idea what is wrong with the situation; it appears that you are either in a stopped train or outside of the train (and we all know you would never do that!)
Travis, this is one of your best,it's a very strong photo, everything seems to be suspended in the air.
I am very happy with your exhibition in Abilene, congratulations. Pitty I live in Madrid!
Absolutely beautiful. One of my favorites.
Beautiful shot. Congratulations with your exhibit in Texas!
I CAN'T TELL WHAT'S WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, then again, I've never ridden at the front of the train on this line...hmmmmm. Is the problem that it would be dark by the time you headed back to Brooklyn at the end of the day, or maybe you're at the back of the train, not the front at all! No, you're on the wrong side of the tracks for that.
At any rate, it's a gorgeous and wondrous image.
In answer to this question, and I remind you I said it was silly. This image was shot on a BROOKLYN bound F train as it approaches Smith and 9th. Brooklyn bound being the key detail. At the time the image was made I should have been going the other way. Which I had been. It was so crazy foggy I decided at Carroll street to get off and go back to Smith and 9th and look around. When I got back there I hung out for a bit and then hopped another Manhattan bound train back to the city. So I'd say Victoria was closest to getting it.
On another note, I am endlessly amazed at the results you can get shooting through a dirty window. This one was positively awful. Makes me feel even better about not buying the expensive lenses.
Wow, i just found your site through another photoblog i view from Northern Ireland (and i'm in Canada).
You're work is stunning, and this image is truly haunting with the fog causing the line to dissapear in front of you. Your images on the site make me even more upset that i have still never managed to make the 10 hour drive from Toronto to New York to explore.
And, since you might be interested, there is a a gallery show of Toronto Photobloggers looking specifically at Transit and people in the move here: http://www.spacing.ca/intransit/ I know you won't be able to come up, but thought you might enjoy the images.
