Like all New Yorkers I was fascinated to find out how NYC would look differently yesterday. Turns out, like many others, I didn’t really care for what I found. I spent some time photographing at my usual starting point, 4th Avenue & Prospect Avenue and the station of my terminus, Grand Central. As I edited the work last night I realized I didn't really care for the subway with out the people. Though the images are interesting for their timely quality I don't find myself so drawn them. So my camera stayed home today and will probably stay here till this is over. Oh yeah, not to mention there is no place to put my camera while riding my bike. I could have a long conversation about photographing my commute, whatever that maybe, vs. just my subway commute. I’ll save that for another time.
So I'll be posting images from Tuesday for the next couple of days and you can get my impression of the people less underground from these.
This image has a pretty funny story. I wondered down to the platform at Grand Central and found this guy standing on the other side of this rather ominous gate eating some chips. When I started talking to him he didn't like the camera and wandered back toward the newsstand nervously. Just as he did these two NYPD officers came over and told me I had to leave. I asked about the newsstand guy and they informed me that he was not able to get a hold of his boss and was forced to keep the newsstand open. So there he was, sitting in his stand with a wide-open Grand Central station lying barren in front of him. I really wish I could have gone in to have a better look but I think this pretty much captures his plight.
Bike ride to work was chilly and crowded. In many ways it was not much different that riding a rush hour train, except I was wearing a helmet. The bummer was knowing all day long I would be rushing home in the dark and cold. The only thing that warmed me was looking at the miles of stopped traffic as I zipped past.
whoa...spooky.
I feel for ya. Cycling in the cold is not pleasant - and in nyc its colder than I have ever experienced myself.
This one gives me a lonely feeling, much like the last one.....
I hope this strike ends soon. There's only so much you guys (and soon to include me) can take.
