Top image is from this morning. Bottom image is from Monday (I think). Either way it's about the exact same time and same platform. M & R line.
How do you show the absence of something? I could have shown all the sour faces as we waited for our alternative modes of transport. Except that there weren't that many. The first day is always like an adventure. I believe tomorrow everyone will be a fair bit grumpier. I know I will be. What with my two-hour commute home (no reflection on the wonderful company.). I'm thinking about getting out the bike tomorrow though.
I had to slip under a chain at the top of the stairs to get down to the platform. It was eerily quiet. I keep thinking I heard footsteps from a backroom but it really looked like I was alone. It was a very different feeling than when you're on a platform late at night and you're alone. It just felt wrong.
So here's hoping they get it right, soon. It’s going to get boring showing empty platforms.
Awesome shot! Good luck to you tomorrow.
I love this composition!
I like these shots paired together. Communicates more than words can say.
what a difference between these two stations!!! i'll be so happy when the strike is over.
It's the same station.
On my ride to work today, two wheels not four, I was thinking about being down on this platform and I realized what I was feeling. It was like the location of a crazy party that had just wrapped up. And while everyone had gone home for the evening, I had been left behind. It was a sad kinda moment.
It's much nicer to see all the people... but it is pretty amazing to see an empty platform.
I like the symmetry of the first photograph and the perspective of the continuous light at the top, coupled with the "path" right below it. "And the light will light your way...." Also, the seeming perpetuation of the light, and foreseeable emptiness of the station is analagous to the possibility of the never ending distress from the recent events. However, it seems an outstanding similarity between the pictures is the absence of a train. (Was this an auspice of what was to happen? Hmmm.) Additionally, I simply HAD to mention the two lovebirds who are making the best of it. Or should i say, "making out" the best of it. And that individual with the hand to her/his head, saying "Damn, what am I gonna do now? LOL. Lovely shots, Travis.
By the way, Travis, where does your commute take you? Do you have to trot across the Brooklyn Bridge too? Or were you able to play the vehicular lotto in getting a ride with someone. Hope it wasnt so stressful. (Not in NYC, so, I wouldnt know what it's like.) My empathy extends to you though. Get out that bike!!
le baiser dans le metro n'aura pas lieu
The top photo reminds me of when I was at one of the stations late at night in the summer. Great contrasting shots. I hope it all works out soon for all those affected.
