There is something incredibly sad about this image... defeat?... exhaustion?...desperation?... we never will know but wonder. You have an incredible collection of emotion on this blog. It seems like there is such heaviness within so many of the people that you capture. Perhaps it is the repetition of life...the coming and going... when we all would rather be some other place besides the in-between travel of destinations. Keep going with this blog. I feel that you are documenting something very special here.
Great capture... I echo the comments made above. There's something about the "human collisions" we have in the subway (here in Montreal called the Metro). I'm often curious to know where folks are coming from or going to.
I remember this one story I heard in a workshop about a guy sitting in the subway next to a man with his kids. From the passenger’s perspective, the Father just sat there as his kids were being very disruptive and running around the car bothering other passengers. Finally, the person sitting next to the Dad said: "Sir, aren't you going to tell your kids to stop?" And the man replied: "Oh, I guess I should. We're coming from the hospital where their Mother just died. I guess they don't know how to deal with it yet..."
So, I'm reminded in this shot about that story and how our perspective of what we see is only an opinion. I love your photos. Thanks.
So the hand says "If I can't hold the doors, I'll hold on to this instead".
Amongst a site crammed with so many gems, this one is one of the best. Not a face in sight, just a hand clinging on, steadying the passenger during another ride from A to B. What also adds to this image is that fact it is so hard to make out the form behind it - where is the head / face / body / shoulder connected to the arm? The only thing we can look at is the hand...
Gee whizz, I sound so pretentious! But a great photo - loved yesterdays one too.

Dan, if there was a heavy comment of the day award, you'd get it. That is some story.

You have and incredible eye for capturing situations and composition. I love this one.
I think this is one of your best.
Fantastic. The hand is as beautifully rendered as any work of classical sculpture.
Reminds me of how I sometimes feel after a hard day teaching.
