To all our dear friends in London, our thoughts and prayers are with you today. It is a telling sign that in this day and age even your daily commute to work can put you in the path of great peril. Another awful result of an attack like this is that even after London pulls itself back together no one there will ever be able to get on the train with out great concern. As a New Yorker I don't look at planes overhead the same anymore. This is the arena of that terrorist work in. It is the common person that pays the price for policies out of our control, and I mean the policies we hear from all sides of today's conflicts.
When I stated on my faq that these photographs might be interesting because they portray the subway commuter in 2004-2005, it was because of the possibility of these kinds of events to which I was thinking of. The reality of commuting underground has become a very different experience today than it ever was in the past. It's a much more stressful commute when you feel the need to evaluate your fellow commuters on weather they might be a threat to everyone’s safety in the car.
If you’re interested in keeping up with what's happening in London via blog I would recommend www.london-underground.blogspot.com
Interestingly enough I did not take may camera with me today because I was going to the Brooklyn courthouse and knew it would be a hassle going in with it. They don’t allow cameras in the building. I’m a little anxious about carrying the camera tomorrow. Nerves will be on edge.
Your sentence, "It is the common person that pays the price for policies out of our control, and I mean the policies we hear from all sides of today's conflicts," is the sanest, most concise thing I've heard about terrorism in a long time. Well said, all of it. Thanks.
Hey Travis,
I was wondering what your photo would be today in response to the terrorist attacks on the London transit system yesterday. Even though some of your photos show some love between passengers, most of the images show people so disconnected to their surrounds and the people around them. It's nice to see this threesome connected not only by the man's arms but also by the appearance that they are interested in something beyond the floor beneath their feet. My question is 'how could anyone notice anything if no one is paying attention?'
Solidarity, family, love...this is the perfect photo to show right now. Nice comment above as well. I agree.
nice family shot! like the intimate feeling of this one.
What a perfect image in light of the events that transpired on this day. I am a big fan of portraits taken from behind. They are very interesting and allow for a different level of interpretation due to that fact that you have no facial clues.
Wonderful, the perfect riposte.
You're giving the anonymous commuter a face......we have to look at eachother as humans. Not as strangers!
