Your evenings work bore great fruit. It's like a religious devotional painting. So nice to be so close and intimate with your subject.I want to ask all kinds of questions about the hows of this picture but will resist and instaed marvel at it's magic. Bravo Ruski

I almost never ask a subject before I take their photo. To do so would spoil the moment. I am trying to do some more formal portraits but that's slow going. 90 percent of the time I don't shoot from the hip. But there are times when I know if I raise the camera the moment will be ruined. I shot this one with the camera in my lap. I still checked the lcd a couple of times and got off three or four frames. I too am intimidated. I was really sleepy this morning and wanted to just ride to work. I had been watching this young man and when I realized I wanted to make the photo the adrenaline totally woke me up. My heart was racing and I had to balance the need to compose a nice image and also not piss anyone off. Luckliy my stop was coming up so I got off the image and then jumped off the train...

Staring at other riders on the subway is kind of an unspoken taboo. That's why this photo is so interesting to me. It feels very intimate, and his face is so full of emotion.
Great shot, I love all the emotion you captured. I almost never ask subjects before I take their photos either, I get intimidated as well and I've been "caught" in a number of situations...Anyways I'm glad you decided to snap this one for all of us to see.
Damn... I'm always impressed with the shots you get away with. I don't have the nerve to shoot on subway cars unless I'm pulling the old "just taking a picture of my friend" trick.
Great, The expression of this guy, very cool, listening music, dreaming. It's wonderful.

I'm always amazed how out of it riders can get when they get tuned into their music! I used to be one of those riders. I don't listen much any more on the train. I find that I can't really concentrate on my surroundings. Altough it does help when I want to make an image at quiet point in the ride. Since I can't hear the shutter I just fire off a frame and keep rockin to my music...

Stunning pictures Travis! I really enjoy them. Maybe it's the NY metro that scares people to take pictures. Over here in Holland (mainly trains) it's no problem, I usually tell people after I took the pic and show the display. With people above 30 it usually ends in a nice chat. Under 30 they get sceptical and you better don't tell even here. Did you get some nice conversations cause of you taking pics in the metro?
Anyway go on, you're pics have charactar!

BTW you could use one of these mamyia 65's with a viewfinder on top, you have to look down on your camara wich makes it less intimidating so it's easier to catsch the real moment. Unfortunately the shutter makes quiet a CLICK so you will wake them up after your 1st try;)

Another superb urban portrait. *Bowing on floor in a Waynes World stylie*
Some striking photos here. Captures the impersonal and claustrophobic nature of the subway system.
many French people in there !
as always, your picture is great ! how do you catch so well the impression of loneliness in such a big -and great- city
Really nice shot.
